Do you need to credit these nature photos? – Affordable Nature Photos
No credit is required for any permitted use. Where one still helps, how to write it, and what it does not do.
No. Attribution is not required anywhere, for any use the licence permits: not on packaging, not in advertising, not on a website, not in print.
Requiring a credit on an image bound for a product label is a rule nobody can follow, and an unfollowable rule is worse than none.
Where a credit still earns its space
Editorial pages. Most publications credit every photograph as house style. Following it keeps the picture desk happy and finishes the layout.
Place captions. In nature work the location is usually more interesting to a reader than the source. Where a location is documented on the image page, naming it is content rather than compliance.
Your own records. The most valuable credit is invisible: the asset id in the layout file, the job notes or the asset manager. When someone asks in a year whether the photograph on the back panel is cleared, that reference answers it in ten seconds.
Format
Short and factual, place first:
Beech woodland in autumn, Cotswolds — naturephotos.website
Naming the site is optional. Naming the place is the part a reader might want.
What a credit does not do
It does not extend the licence. Naming the source does not convert a prohibited use into a permitted one, does not replace buying a licence, and creates no right to redistribute the file.
It must not imply endorsement. Using a photograph from this catalogue does not mean this site has reviewed or approved your product, your claim or your campaign, and a credit worded to suggest otherwise is not acceptable.
Alt text is not a credit
An image on a web page needs alt text, and a credit line is not alt text. Describe the picture for someone who cannot see it: "Beech woodland in low autumn sun, leaves on the path" is useful; "nature photos" is not.
The description on each image page is written to be usable as a starting point. Adapt it to the page rather than pasting it across twenty of them, because the whole value of alt text is context.
Accuracy
If you caption a location, use the one on the image page. Where none is recorded, none was documented, and inventing one is how errors enter print and get repeated by whoever reads your page next. Corrections are welcome and acted on quickly.
Crediting inside a team
The credit worth being strict about is internal. Whoever places an image should record the asset id next to it, in the layout file or the job sheet, at the moment they place it.
Reconstructing that afterwards means opening every file and matching pictures by eye, which on a project with forty images is most of a day. Recording it costs five seconds per image and it is the difference between answering a rights question immediately and dreading it.
