Editing is unrestricted. The two standing limits, and the practical notes that matter when a photograph sits under type.
Yes, without restriction, for any use the licence permits. Crop, flip, grade, retouch, cut out, composite, distort past recognition.
The two limits
You may not distribute the edited image as an image. Editing, however heavy, does not produce a file you can licence onward.
And you may not edit so as to misrepresent a real, identifiable place or person. Design use is unrestricted; the line is a factual claim. Replace a sky freely, then do not present the result as a record of that place on that day.
Photographs under type
The most common editing job in brand work, and the one most often done badly.
A slight blur behind text does not create legibility; it creates a slightly blurred busy area behind text. What works is a real scrim: a solid panel, a controlled linear gradient, or a substantial darkening of a genuinely quiet region.
Better still, choose a frame with an actual empty area. Sky, water, mist and out-of-focus foreground all give you space to write in. Selecting for that at the search stage saves the whole problem.
Check contrast at final size, not at the size you are working. Type that reads on a 27-inch monitor at 200 per cent can disappear on a shelf at two metres.
Cut-outs
Fine edges — foliage, grass, fur, water spray — are where automatic selection fails. Work at full resolution, refine the edge with a small radius, and check against mid-grey rather than white; fringing invisible on white is obvious on a coloured layout.
Sky replacement
Match light direction before colour. A scene lit from the left under a sky lit from the right reads as wrong instantly, even to people who cannot say why. Check the horizon at 100 per cent for halos along treelines, which are invisible at fit-to-screen.
Sharpening and compression
Sharpen at output size, never before. Foliage sharpened at full resolution and then downsampled crunches on every leaf edge.
For web, tune compression against the smoothest area of the frame. Sky and water gradients band long before foliage does.
Compositing
Buy several frames and build one image if you want. Match light direction first, colour second, and check the scale of anything recognisable.
Keep the layered file and record the asset ids in it. Four licensed images is four licences, and knowing which four later is worth ten seconds now.
