The file is never the product. Anything you build with it can be.

Not permitted

• Uploading to another stock library, marketplace or free-image site.
• Bundling into a download pack, asset archive or resource collection.
• Shipping inside a template, theme, UI kit, preset or mockup.
• Print-on-demand where the photograph is the entire product.
• Datasets and model training.
• Handing the original file to a client or colleague for their own separate work.

Permitted

• Posters and prints where the picture sits inside your design.
• Book covers, album art, editorial spreads.
• Packaging, at any run.
• Merchandise carrying your design.
• Websites, apps, campaigns, client deliverables.
• Publications you sell, including books, magazines, paid reports and courses.

Print-on-demand

Asked more than anything else, so plainly: listing the photograph as a wall print, canvas or case, where the image is the product, is reselling the file. Your customer is buying the picture. A machine putting it on a substrate in between does not change what was sold.

The same photograph as one layer in a composition of yours — overprinted, collaged, combined with typography or other images — is your work and you may sell it.

The test: what does the buyer think they are paying for? If the honest answer is the photograph, you need a different licence.

Templates and themes

Use the images in your screenshots and demo sites. Do not ship the files. Your buyer sees the layout with a picture in it and receives a placeholder. That is the standard arrangement across the industry and it is fine here.

Client handovers

Buy the licence for the project. Your client may use the delivered piece indefinitely.

Handing over the original files so they can start unrelated work later is the case that trips people. That is a second use and needs a second licence. At five dollars, buy it and put it on the invoice; it costs less than the email exchange about whether it was necessary.

Publications

Selling a magazine, book, report or course that contains the photograph is permitted, because the reader is buying the publication. Offering the image as a separate download to your readers is not.

If unsure

Describe the use in two sentences and ask. The answer is usually yes, and having it in writing before a print run is worth the five minutes.
